catálogo computarizado abre acceso electrónico a millares
de reportajes editados en español, a través de una base
de datos llamada 'Informe'. El sistema del Condado de
Multnomah, gracias a un servicio de traducción, atiende
a los que no hablan inglés en su línea de información
general. Le responde tales preguntas como ¿Cuál es
la montaña más alta de Sudamérica, y cuántos metros de
altura tiene? ¿Quién fue el máximo goleador del Mundial
de '52? |
Washington County's new computerized
catalogue offers a gateway to thousands of Spanish-language
periodical articles through the 'Informe' database. Multnomah
County Libraries, thanks to a translation service, offers
telephone reference help to those who do not speak English-finding
answers to such questions as What's the highest mountain
in South America, and how tall is it? Who scored the most
goals in the 1952 World Cup? |

Children of
all ages will find the library an inexhaustible source
of fun and knowledge, and their visits will enhance their
creativity and learning. Imaginations will bubble over
with toys, storytimes, and a wide variety of books and
tapes in many languages. |

de usuario. Para obtenerla, generalmente uno necesita
verificar su identidad y dirección local, mostrando alguna
identificación, según la politica de cada biblioteca.

All the services offered
by our public libraries are free to library card holders.
To get the card, you generally need to verify your name
and local address; the identification required depends
upon the policy of each library. And thanks to exchange
agreements, a person who lives in any of the four counties
mentioned here qualifies for cards in each one. |

es esencialmente una cadena de bibliotecas afiliadas,
que comparten todos sus materiales. De esta forma, alguien

In library jargon, a 'system'
is basically a chain of associated branches that share
all their materials. This means that a Multnomah County
card holder can check out items from Gresham, St. Johns,
downtown, and 12 other branches. If an item in the system
is not at your neighborhood library, you can easily place
a hold and have it sent without charge. All four library
systems also offer mobile services for the homebound. |

de algo que Vd. desea, la biblioteca puede obtenerlo por
préstamo interbibliotecario, o bien puede pedir que su
biblioteca se lo compre. Los presupuestos de nuestras

If you're looking for something
that is not owned by the system, you can obtain it through
an interlibrary loan, or ask that your system purchase
the item. Library budgets include funds to satisfy such
patron requests. The librarians consulted for this article
say they pay attention to suggestions from Spanish speakers,
as these help a great deal in assembling a good, relevant
collection. |
| Cabe mencionar la importancia
de devolver a tiempo sus materiales prestados. Cada biblioteca-con
excepción de las del sistema Fort Vancouver-se impone
multas por demoras. Lo que cobra depende de la biblioteca,
varia entre diez centavos al día hasta, para algunos videos,
todo un dólar. Hay que prestar atención a la fecha límite,
pero si se le olvida, una llamada puede facilitar su aplazamiento.
De todos modos, el quedarse con materiales prestados es
un robo, y cuando se trata de algo en español, es efectivamente
una privación para la comunidad hispana. |
It bears mentioning that
it's important to return borrowed materials on time. All
the libraries, aside from those in the Fort Vancouver
system, charge fines for late returns. The charge varies
from a dime a day to, for some videos, a dollar a day.
It's crucial to pay attention to due dates, but if you
are unable to return something on time you can renew over
the phone. In any case, failing to return borrowed items
is theft, and when they are Spanish-language items it
is the entire Hispanic community that is deprived. |

públicas necesitan su apoyo. Y son un recurso de gran
valor para nuestras familias. No es sorprendente que la
Organización de las Naciones Unidas las describa como
"fuerza viva de educación, cultura e información,
y agente esencial del fomento de la paz y los valores
espirituales en la mente del ser humano." Hay muchas
maneras de apoyar a su biblioteca, pero la primera es
utilizarla. |
Public libraries need your
support, and they are a tremendous resource for families.
It should come as no surprise that UNESCO describes them
as "a living force for education, culture and information,
and as an essential agent for the fostering of peace and
spiritual welfare through the minds of men and women."
There are many ways to support your library, but the most
important is to use it. |
