sabio que aseveró, "Aula máxima es la biblioteca, y
también lugar de recreo del espíritu." Palabras de José
Vasconcelos, celebrado como Maestro de las Américas en los
años 20, y el primer Secretario de Educación Pública
después de la Revolución Mexicana.

from Oaxaca who said, "The library is the greatest of all
classrooms, and a place where the human spirit finds
recreation." Those are the words of José
Vasconcelos, known in the 1920s as Maestro de las
Américas, the most celebrated educator in Latin
America. He was Mexico's first Secretrary of
Education after the Revolution. |

Aula máxima; salón de clase
para todos. ¿Quién entre nosotros no es estudiante
perpetuo, haciendo la lucha a diario para aprender algo
nuevo? Nos preguntamos ¿Cómo podemos ser mejores padres? ¿Cómo
se cuecen guisados novedosos? ¿Cómo podría reponer o
construir algo en el hogar? Aunque se den clases en estas
materias, poca gente dispone del tiempo libre para asistir
a una escuela cada vez que desea saber algo. |
Grandest classroom, and a
classroom for all of us. Who among us is not a
perpetual student, working every day to learn something
new? We wonder how to be better parents, how to cook
interesting new dishes, how to fix up our house.
Though it's possible to take classes in those subjects,
few have the time to enroll in school every time they want
to learn something. |

Por eso llegamos a ser
autodidactos, es decir, que estudiamos por cuenta propia.
Y las herramientas del autodidacto se encuentran en la
biblioteca. Recetarios. Libros sobre salud. Manuales de
reparación automotriz. Quizás conoces a personas que, sin
poder inscribirse en clase alguna porque les impiden las
exigencias de trabajo y familia, logran aprender bastante
inglés. Ellos buscan maneras de estudiar a solas. Tomamos
por ejemplo el famosísimo videocurso llamado Inglés Sin
Barreras. Te facilita estudiar a tu ritmo, mas cuesta
un dineral: su precio en exceso de mil dólares lo pone
fuera del alcance de muchos. Pero ¿sabes qué? Varias
bibliotecas locales prestan el mero Inglés Sin Barreras
sin costo, y por supuesto es muy solicitado. |
That's why we become
autodidacts, self-taught, taking care of our own
continuing education. The tools of the autodidact
are in the library. Cookbooks. Health guides.
Auto repair manuals. Maybe you know people who,
unable to take classes because of the demands of work and
family, nevertheless manage to learn a lot of English.
They find ways to study on their own. Consider for
example the well-known video ESL course called Inglés
Sin Barreras. It allows you to study at your own
pace, but it costs a fortune: the $1500 price tag puts it
out of many people's reach. But you know what?
A bunch of libraries around here lend out Inglés Sin
Barreras free of charge, and you can bet there's
plenty of demand for it. |

Muchas bibliotecas públicas
también albergan clases grupales para niños y adultos, en
donde se enseñan inglés y alfabetización, dan capacitación
en habilidades como manejo de computadoras, y hacen
talleres de manualidades de todo tipo. Tales bibliotecas
plasman los ideales de don José Vasconcelos, tomando en
serio su papel como centros comunitarios de ilustración,
bondad, y diversión. Lugares de recreo del espíritu. |
A lot of public libraries
also host group classes for kids and adults, where people
study literacy, English, computer skills, and all kinds of
crafts. Such libraries put into practice the ideals
of José Vasconcelos, taking seriously their roles as
community centers of learning, fellowship, and fun.

engagement, and entertainment. |

Tenía razón, don Pepe. La
biblioteca pública es nuestra Aula Máxima. La universidad
del pueblo, la única academia que no niega la entrada a
nadie. Cobra la colegiatura más barata, y no hay examen de
ingreso. Los requisitos son sencillos: la pura curiosidad
y ganas de superarse. Todo alumno es bienvenido. Todos
aprueban. Ahí se aprende, ahí se entretiene. |
Vasconcelos was right, you
know. The public library is our greatest classroom.
The people's university, the only institution of learning
that doesn't turn down anyone's application. Its
tuition is the cheapest, and there's no entrance exam.
The prerequisites are simple: just curiosity and a desire
to learn and improve. Every learner is welcome;
everyone gets a good grade. It's a place to learn
and a place to have fun. |
