Is reading work? Or is it a
delight? The funny thing is, the act of reading is
both of these; it all depends on what we're
reading, and our reasons for doing so.

Con frecuencia los niños están, nos duele
decirlo, entrenados a mirar la lectura como otra tarea
aburrida de la escuela. Y lo es, si los maestros no les
dejan leer nada más que sus tediosos libros de texto. El

Too often kids are, sadly,
trained to regard reading as just another boring part of
being in school. And that's what it is, if their
teachers don't have them read anything other than tedious
textbooks. Our miraculous capacity to read shouldn't
be reduced to an annoying device that ties us to
distasteful obligations. It is, rather, a golden
ticket, an escape hatch, a consolation and a counselor—a
way to discover new worlds, inspiring people, and
undreamed-of possibilities. |

the sooner the better. How soon? There are no
rules. You can introduce them to books before they
know how to read. Or to talk. Or to crawl. |

they want as they develop a taste for literature. |

Reading aloud with your kids is a great way to bond with
them. You read to them, they read to you, and most
importantly you have fun together in a way that creates
