Aunque parezca increíble,
algunos niños tienen miedo a la comida. Comen a fuerzas,
bajo protesta, sólo para evitar una paliza. ¿Te acuerdas
de cuando el libre albedrio no venía al caso en cuestiones
gastronómicas? Tan pronto como logramos el privilegio de
elegir nuestros manjares predilectos, el comer se
convierte en puro placer. |
It might sound
incredible, but food frightens some kids. They eat
under protest and have to be forced or threatened.
Remember back when freedom of choice wasn't what governed
your eating? As soon as we get old enough to have
the privilege to pick our favorite foods, eating becomes
sheer pleasure. |

libros son la comida. Podemos fomentar su gusto por la
lectura dándole opciones variadas. Con esto nos ayudará la
biblioteca. |
For a kid's mind,
books are food. We can help them develop a taste for
reading by making sure they have plenty of choices.
The library helps with this. |

¿Por qué a muchos niños de
escuela les disgustan leer? Para ellos, es todo un castigo
cuando escuchen un mandado como ¡Tienes que leer tal libro!
Esto les provoca una indigestión cerebral. No debe
sorprender que en primera oportunidad agarren el control
remoto de la tele. |
Why do so many
schoolkids dislike reading? For them, it sounds like
pure punishment to hear an order like, You must read
this book! That can give a kid a bad case of
mental indigestion. It's no surprise that they grab
for the TV remote the first chance they get. |

Pero si les damos el lujo
de eligir, en un ambiente fértil de libros y revistas,
pronto descubrirán lecturas amenas. Leer en libertad, es
placentero. Y las experiencias positivas de la niñez dan
forma al futuro de nuestros hijos. El gusto de leer les
abre caminos, pues facilita la escolaridad, proporciona
mejores posibilidades profesionales, enriquece la vida. ¿Qué
regalo más bonito podríamos dar a los niños que este gusto
de leer? |
But if we give
them the luxury of choice, in an environment rich with
books and magazines, soon they'll discover things they
like to read. To read in perfect freedom is a
joy, and good childhood experiences shape our kids'
futures. A love of reading opens doors for them; it
makes school easier, gives them more opportunities, and
enriches their lives. What better gift could we give
to kids than this love for reading? |

Lo importante es que tengan
libros y revistas a su alcance, que la casa esté sembrado
de ellos. Si dejas 10 libros en el suelo y tu hijo presta
atención a uno nomás, eso en sí es un triunfo. |
What's important is that they have books
and magazines at hand, so seed the house with them.
If you leave 10 books lying on the floor and your child
gets interested in only one of them, that in itself is a
triumph. |

Con tiempo, tus niños se
sentarán cómodos escoger por sí mismos, siempre y cuando
no tienen que leer nada que no les guste—fuera de sus
tareas, claro. Yo elijo tanta salsa echar en los tacos…o
bueno, tanto curtido en las pupusas, cuando ellas se me
antojan. La biblioteca tiene un menú rico y variado. ¡Provecho! |
In time, your
kids will feel comfortable choosing for themselves, as
long as they don't have to read anything they don't like—aside
from their schoolwork, of course. I can decide how much
salsa to put on my tacos...or how much curtido to
put on my pupusas, when that's what I feel like
having. The library offers a rich and varied menu, so
eat up! |
