Un acertijo: ¿Dónde podrías
llenar los brazos de un montón de videos, casetes, CDs,
juguetes, libros, y revistas y, así cargado, brincar
impune de las puertas sin pagar ni un centavo, ni sudar la
gota gorda perseguido por los azules?

Here's a riddle: Where could you load yourself down
with a pile of videos, cassettes, CDs, toys, books, and
magazines, and then skip right out the doors holding all
that stuff without paying a cent or having to flee the
cops? |

mercado o tianguis poco cuidadoso en cuestiones de
seguridad, te aconsejo que no vayas de compras sin

If you're thinking of a store
or a swap meet with lax security, I'd advise you never
to go shopping without supervision. Don't even think
about it. |

gratituamente, sí existe en casi cualquier vecindario.

where everything is lent out for free, really does exist

Hay quienes que, por una
sola experiencia frustrante no piensan en regresar a la
biblioteca para aprovechar sus recursos. Quizás la timidez
los impide. Vale la pena volver, y portarte como
dueño del lugar. Porque en realidad lo eres. |
Some people, because they've had a bad experience there, don't
think about going back to the library to take advantage of
its resources. Maybe shyness holds them up. It's worth
the trouble to return, and act like
you own the place. Because you do. |

Otros por pura desconfianza
tienen miedo de registrarse como usuarios. Sospechan que
la biblioteca funcione como tentáculo del gobierno o de la
migra--pero esto es rotundamente falso. Los bibliotecarios
de este país tienen larga historia de luchar por proteger
la privacidad de sus usuarios, y los fallos judiciales los
han apoyado. A pesar del frenesí antiterrorista y los
asaltos a los derechos civiles por parte del gobierno en
los últimos meses, lo cierto es que la biblioteca en sí no
es trampa. |
Others, out of plain old suspicion, are
afraid to sign up for a library card. They suspect
that the library works like another tentacle of the
government or the INS--but this is entirely false.
Librarians in this country have a long history of fighting
to protect the privacy of their users, and court decisions
have supported them. Despite the current
antiterrorist frenzy and the government's violations of
civil rights these days, the fact is that the library in
itself is not some kind of trap. |

Quizás lo más lamentable es
que haya personas que creen que la biblioteca no les
pertenezca. Que no sea suya porque no son ciudadanos, o no
dominan el idioma inglés. |
Perhaps the saddest thing is that some people believe the
library doesn't belong to them. That it's not theirs
because they're not citizens, or they don't speak English. |

Esta creencia es otro
error. Las bibliotecas públicas, en principio, son de
todos--igual que las calles que caminamos y el aire
que respiramos. En efecto, ya hemos apoyado las
bibliotecas con nuestros impuestos y por tanto debemos
exigir nuestra porción. ¿A que no? |
This is another mistaken belief. Public libraries,
in principle, belong to all of us--just like the streets
we walk and the air we breathe. The fact is we've
already supported libraries with our taxes, so we ought to
get what's coming to us. Right? |

Pero surge otra duda: A
poco una biblioteca gabacha tiene algo para los que no
hablan ni leen inglés ¿verdad? Pues resulta que sí.
Tomamos como ejemplo la Biblioteca Pública de la ciudad de
Los Ángeles, que cuenta con materiales en 28 idiomas.

But then another question comes up: is a US library going
to have anything for people who don't speak or read
English? The answer is yes. Take the Los
Angeles Public Library, for example, which offers
materials in 28 different languages. |
