A este ratón, sólo hay dos cosas de la
biblioteca pública que me molestan: multas, y gatos. |

and horrifying as it sounds, there are libraries that
tolerate these introverted varmints, devourers of my
friends and comrades. The libraries of Mission
Viejo, Whittier, Moorpark, and Silverado Canyon, for
example, all host such demons. |

Igual de peligrosas son las multas
bibliotecarias. ¿Para qué sirven? Son sanciones por la
tardía devolución de materiales prestados. A veces nos
conviene pagar por el privilegio de quedar otro día con un
libro. En el gremio de los bibliotecarios, esta multa es
como la legendaria mordida. |
Just as dangerous
are library fines. What are they for? They're
penalties for returning things late. Sometimes it's
more convenient to pay a few cents for the privilege of
keeping a book an extra day. In the land of
librarians, the fine is like the legendary bribe or
mordida offered to authorities. |

A mí me pican de vez en cuando. De buena
gana les entrego algo de feria, los pobres. Pero, ojo: no
son pocos los usuarios que han amontonado multas
espantosas. |
I get bit from time
to time, and I don't begrudge those librarians a handful
of pocket change. But watch out: more than a few
library users have racked up scary fines. |

Ya sé cómo eludir estos gastos, y pronto
sabrás tú también. Pero debo insistir: multas
bibliotecarias sí son peligrosas. Los videos, por ejemplo,
suelen prestarse por corto plazo—sólo dos o tres días en
muchos casos—y llevan multas duras: típicamente un dólar
diario. Imagínate, si tú y tu familia sacan media docena
de videos, y se olviden de regresarlos…dentro de ocho días,
¡deberían más de $40! |
I know how to avoid
these charges, and in a moment you'll know too. But
I repeat: these fines can be dangerous.
Videos, for instance, are usually lent for short
periods—only two or three days, in many cases—and they
carry big fines: typically a dollar a day. Just
imagine if you and your family were to check out a
half-dozen videos, and then forget to return them...in a
week, you'd owe more than $40! |

deben un dineral, y por consecuencia no se acercan ninguna
biblioteca sino en pesadillas. Si hubieran sabido unas
trucas fáciles, seguirían disfrutando de sus bibliotecas
todavía. |
There are sad
stories of families that owe their library a fortune, and
as a result never go near any library anywhere, except in
nightmares. If they'd only known a few simple tricks,
they'd still be enjoying libraries today. |

Primera truca: puedes renovar el préstamo
de la mayoría de los materiales (con excepción de videos,
generalmente). Esto se hace por teléfono o en persona, y
muchas bibliotecas también facilitan la renovación por
Internet. Es la manera de alargar tu tiempo con un libro o
CD sin registrar multas. Al mismo tiempo puedes vigilar
cuándo se vencen tus otros materiales. |
First trick: you can
renew—that is, extend the borrowing period—of most items
(generally with the exception of videos). This is
done over the phone or in person, and a lot of libraries
also make it easy to renew using the Internet. This
is the way to extend your time with a book or CD without
risking fines. And at the same time you renew, you
can also check on the due dates of your other loans. |

Segunda: a veces las cosas se esfuman en
plena casa, y los niños son requetehábiles en esta especie
de magia. Nuestro nido tiene un estante aparte, solo para
cosas de la biblioteca. Esto nos ayuda localizarlas cuando
se acerquen sus fechas límites. |
Second: sometimes
things disappear right there in the house, and kids are
uncannily adept at this kind of magic. Our little
nest has a designated bookshelf just for stuff from the
library. This makes it easier to find things when
their due dates draw near. |

Tercera: no prestes lo de la biblioteca, ni
a amigos de confianza. Llévalos a la biblioteca contigo.
Te lo agradecerán. |
Third: don't go
around re-lending library items, not even to your most
trusted friends. Instead, take those friends to the
library with you. They'll thank you for it. |
