¿Has comprado de un
catálogo alguna vez? La biblioteca también tiene su
catálogo que describe y clasifica todos sus recursos. El
lector empieza con sólo un autor, idea, o parte de un
título en su mente y el catálogo lo conduce a materiales
relevantes.

Have you ever bought something out of a catalog? The
library has a catalog, too: one that describes and
classifies all its resources. The patron begins with
nothing but an author's name, an idea, or part of a title
in mind, and the catalog leads him to relevant items. |

época abrías cajones y hojeabas tarjetas para descubrir
libros y localizarlos. Por acá, el fichero de papel y
madera ya es reliquía de antaño, víctima de la mentada
revolución cibernética. |
Perhaps in another country or
another time you pulled open drawers and leafed through
cards to discover and find books. Here in the US,
the card catalog of paper and wood has become an antique,
a victim of the famous online revolution. |

as the great gateway to available resources, and it can
make marvelous discoveries. |

conectada al Internet. Y no es difícil aprender a
manejarlo. Si no tienes mucha experiencia con lo que es la
informática, el catálogo bibliotecario es una buena manera

One great advantage of the modern online catalog is its
ability to explore the library at any time of the day or
night, from any computer connected to the Internet.
And it's not difficult to learn to use the catalog.
If you don't have a lot of experience with computers, this
is a good way to begin. |

La biblioteca municipal de
Los Angeles ofrece en su web, y en español, una guía
detallada del catálogo. ¿Y las demás bibliotecas? Depende.
Algunas suponen que todo el mundo entienda inglés, otras
esquivan el problema por completo abandonándonos sin
instrucción alguna, ni en inglés ni chino. Si no te es
claro cómo usuar el catálago electrónico de tu biblioteca,
ojalá que las pautas generales que siguen te ayuden.

The Los Angeles Public Library offers on its website—and
in Spanish, at that—a detailed guide to the catalog.
And other libraries? It depends. Some seem to
assume that the entire world understands English, and
others avoid the problem altogether by leaving us with no
instructions at all. If you have trouble figuring
out how to use your library's catalog, I hope the general
guidelines that follow will help. As always, you can

Empezamos con un título, el
nombre de un autor, o bien un tema simplemente. El fichero
computarizado piensa por nosotros hasta cierto punto. Si
tecleaamos en la cajetilla la palabra "Mexico," y buscamos
por palabra clave (keyword), sale una lista larga
de libros, videos y otros artículos con "México" en su
título o su registro temático. Si escogemos una búsqueda
por autor (author) vemos listadas todas las obras
disponibles de la persona indicada. |
We begin with a title, an author's name, or simply an idea
or concept. The computer catalog can think for us,
up to a certain point. If we type the word "Mexico"
in the box and do a keyword search, we get a long
list of books, videos, and other items with "Mexico" in
their titles or their item records. If we choose to
search by author, we see a list of all the available works
by the person we selected. |

¡Ojo! Si deletreas mal, esto
pejudicará el resultado. Así inténtalo varias veces si
tienes dudas. |
Watch out! If you misspell something, that will mess
up your results. Do several searches, with variant
spellings, if you're not sure. |

La página del artículo dice
en cuáles sucursales está, y provee la opción de
reservarlo en tu nombre siguiendo los pasos desde Place
Hold o Reserve. Así puedes pedir que lo
entreguen a tu biblioteca local. |
The item's record will tell you which libraries have it,
and will give you the chance to reserve it in your name by
following the steps from "Place Hold" or "Reserve."
That way you can have the item delivered to your local
library. |
